How Kinesio taping can ease your pregnancy symptoms
You have probably seen Kinesio taping used if you’ve watched any major sporting events, from the Olympic games to a professional football match. Even casual weekend runners can be seen wearing this increasingly popular sports tape that can help with a wide range of pain symptoms.
Kinesio Tape is a hypoallergenic tape that aids the body to heal naturally and relieves pain and discomfort. It works by microscopically lifting the top layer of skin, to encourage better flow of blood and nutrients, reduction of swelling, and to facilitate lymphatic drainage and the removal of toxins. When applied correctly, the results are immediate and relief can continue for up to 3-5 days each time it is applied.
What you might not have been aware of, is that Kinesio taping can also be used safely during pregnancy to ease a number of your pregnancy symptoms in a safe, natural and non-invasive way.
Kinesio taping for reduction of belly tension
The pressure of a baby resting on your pelvis will understandably cause tension, swelling and discomfort in your lower belly and pelvis, known as pelvic girdle pain (PGP) or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), but Kinesio tape can help with this. When applied in a specific direction and order underneath the bump, it can lift your belly ever so slightly to relieve this tension and help to redistribute the weight of the baby as the bump grows in size.
Kinesio taping to help with breathlessness
As your baby grows and begins to push into your diaphragm it can become harder to breathe comfortably – this is another pregnancy symptom that can be helped with the use of Kinesio tape. By attaching a strip of Kinesio tape at the top of your belly on one side of your torso and stretching it over to the other side, your belly can be gently lifted up, making it easier for you to breathe.
Kinesio taping for pregnancy-related lower back pain
A clinical trial published by Medical Science Monitor explored the effects of Kinesio Tape on pregnancy-related lower back pain during a clinical trial of 65 patients, who were randomised and treated with either paracetamol alone, or paracetamol and Kinesio taping. The Kinesio taping group was significantly superior than the control group in all outcome measures, highlighting that Kinesio taping is a valid and effective complementary treatment method for lower back pain during pregnancy.
Kinesio taping for the reduction of swollen ankles
Swollen ankles are frustrating side-effect of pregnancy for many women. During pregnancy, the body holds on extra fluid and the pressure from this and from the growing uterus can cause swelling in the ankles and feet. There is a helpful remedy for this though. The Kinesio taping technique used for swelling and oedema is known as lymphatic taping and involves applying the anchor end of the tape close to the lymphatic drainage ducts, with strips of tape extending along the nearby lymphatic channels. The tape is applied with a light stretch, lifting the skin just enough to relieve pressure on the lymphatic vessels and allowing them to drain excess fluid more efficiently.
If you are interested in exploring a medication-free, safe alternative to pregnancy related pain, Kinesio Tape is well worth considering. Get in touch to find out more about the benefits of Kinesio Tape during pregnancy, or to book a treatment.
