Pelvic Floor Exercises for those Recovering from an Episiotomy

An episiotomy is a surgical cut made at the opening of the vagina during childbirth. It's usually done to widen the vaginal opening, allowing a baby to be delivered more easily.

This procedure is common in cases where there may be a risk of tearing of the tissues around the vaginal opening. Although it used to be relatively common, in recent years it’s not as prevalent.

However, there are cases where an episiotomy might still be necessary: for instance, if the baby is in distress and needs to be delivered quickly, or if the vaginal opening needs to be widened for the safe delivery of the baby.

What is the best way to recover from an episiotomy?

Pelvic floor exercises, commonly known as Kegels, can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and promote healing. It’s also important to rest and avoid taking part in strenuous activities. During this time it’s best to avoid lifting heavy objects.
