Is Hip Pain in Pregnancy a Sign of Pelvic Girdle Pain?
Hip pain in pregnancy is common, but it can have several different causes. For some women, discomfort around the hips may be linked to pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, often referred to as PGP.
At PelviCare, we support women experiencing a range of pregnancy-related musculoskeletal symptoms through specialist antenatal physiotherapy and women’s health physiotherapy. Understanding where your pain is coming from is an important first step towards finding the right support.
What Is Pelvic Girdle Pain?
Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain describes pain felt around the joints and structures of the pelvis. This can include the lower back, hips, groin, pubic bone and sacroiliac joints.
Because these areas work closely together when we move, hip pain during pregnancy can sometimes be part of a wider pattern of pelvic girdle discomfort rather than an isolated hip problem.
Symptoms can vary from person to person. Some women notice pain when walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg, getting dressed or turning over in bed. Others may experience hip pain in pregnancy at night or discomfort that becomes more noticeable as pregnancy progresses.
How Can You Tell If Hip Pain Is Related to PGP?
There is no single symptom that confirms pelvic girdle pain. However, hip pain alongside pelvic, groin or lower-back discomfort may suggest that several areas are being affected.
Pain around the sacroiliac joints can also be felt near the hips and buttocks, which is why sacroiliac joint pain in pregnancy can sometimes be mistaken for a problem within the hip itself.
Rather than trying to diagnose the cause yourself, an assessment with a suitably qualified physiotherapist can help identify which movements and structures may be contributing to your symptoms.
Can Physiotherapy Help?

We assess each person individually and may use a combination of movement advice, appropriate exercises, hands-on treatment and practical strategies to make day-to-day activities more comfortable.
If you are experiencing persistent hip pain while pregnant, particularly if it is affecting walking, sleeping or everyday movement, it may be helpful to seek professional advice.
